Yale Secures Third Place After 69-56 Win Over Milwaukee
Azar Swain scored 16 points and Yale relied on its stifling defense en route to a 69-56 win over Milwaukee in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off Palms Division third-place game.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 19 points in the second half, holding the Panthers to 35 percent shooting and just 26 points in the period. Yale also forced 13 Milwaukee turnovers throughout the contest.
Swain shot 4-of-8 from deep to highlight a balanced effort for Yale’s offense. Eze Dike, who entered the game with four total assists on the year, recorded six assists – matching a career-high – to go along with 10 points. Michael Feinberg chipped in with a career-high 12 points, EJ Jarvis reached a new career-high with 10 points and Matt Knowling corralled a career-high eight rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.
Donovan Newby had a career-high 16 points to lead Milwaukee. DeAndre Gholston chipped in 13 points, and Joey St. Pierre recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds – both season-highs.
Gholston shined with 11 points – including 3-of-5 from three-point range – in a fast-paced, back-and-forth first half. After back-to-back buckets by Swain gave Yale a six-point advantage going into the under-4 timeout, a frenzy of 3-pointers in the final minute – two by Gholston and one by Yale’s Jalen Gabbidon – resulted in a one-point Bulldog lead going into the break.
Dike and Gholston were named to the Palms Division All-Tournament Team following today’s game. Dike stuffed the stat sheet, averaging 11 points on 53.3 percent from the field, to go along with 3.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds over the two games. Gholston averaged 16 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in the tournament.
